My name is Ann and my sister, Linda, and I were born and raised in Grand Ridge, Florida. I am 5 years older than Linda, and we are as close as two sisters can be. We grew up sharing a bedroom and even though I was older, she always thought she was about the same age. Needless to say we've remained extremely close throughout the years. Even when I got older and began to date, Linda would ask to go with me and I thought nothing of letting her do just that. I can't say what my date might have thought, but I have always enjoyed having her around so much that I didn't mind at all!
Linda was only 40 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988. Having found a lump in her breast on a Friday night, it was emotionally draining to have to wait until the following Monday morning when she could contact her doctor. The results of her biopsy were malignant and Linda was devastated.
Linda went through some very difficult times after that and she needed the support of her family and friends more so than ever in the past. I assured Linda that I would be there for her through each and every operation and support her in all decisions that she had to make in the future. Enrolling in the study was really a "no-brainer" for me. I felt so proud to be a part of this important research, and hopeful for the future generations of women who will benefit from all that we will learn.
During her mastectomy, Linda's positive outlook on life always persevered. Although she is my younger sister, I have looked toward Linda on many occasions since this experience for guidance in dealing with difficult situations. She is truly an inspiration to all who know her. Linda has continued to be cancer-free since this time. She has helped educate many people about the dreaded disease that took so much from her, and the importance of yearly mammograms and early detection of breast cancer.
